Mixed media texture project Design I fall 2010

This series of pieces revolves around a narrative of restoration. Close friends of mine had a family member receive a heart transplant. Her story is beautiful for the pits of a darkness that had the be travelled to see the glory of the dawn, for the way a community rallied around a family to support and pray, and for the cost and value of life learned.

I began to work through concepts along the way of death to bring life, the passing of life from person to another, and the absurd concept of spare parts for human beings. There was also this notion lingering in the back of my mind that the heart, in addition to being a functioning blood pumping machine, within our western culture it is the seat for the soul. It is the place where love comes from. It functions as a symbol for love. So then, this center of a human being is passed to another human being.

This work was in response to those thought processes.

Mixed Media: Gel Transfers, india ink, charcoal, gesso, acrylic paint, wire and thread on hand made paper. Approximately 18" x 18" each.

This series is part of Vive Clothing Company's permanent collection. www.wearvive.com

Tomato Drawing

This tomato drawing got cut a little short. Heat of the light started to wilt the surface of the already ripe tomato. I was going to try to do two sessions with it. Oh well.

Charcoal and Turpenoid on gessoed paper. 14 x 21.

The 1,000

I began The 1,000 as an exploration of the process of entropy. Each drawing is a tracing of the previous tracing, and so the degradation propagates. The slight imperfections of the pen generated mutations on the form that then took life themselves and mutated further. As the image fell apart and the number on the bottom left corner continued to rise, I tried to force myself to be in love with each new image that was created. At times, I had myself convinced, but at some point it stopped being about the image and more about the number. I became a machine that only cared about quantity. The number 1,000 became the goal, and the volume validated the mindless, dispassionate, emotionless, and human-less process.

The volume validated the process.

Cow Skull Painting and Figure Drawing

The cow skull painting that I had in progress wasn't dry enough to work on today. I decided my time would be best spent doing another grisaille study.I also uploaded a little drawing I did in figure class today while Professor Shultis was doing a demo. I had a scrap piece of paper that I had tested some surface treatments on. It turned out to be a nice little drawing. Charcoal on ink stained paper.
